Becoming: an Instapaper alternative for 2026

What Instapaper does well

Instapaper has been a read-later app since 2008, and any Instapaper alternative is measured against a product that is very much alive. Instant Paper, Inc. has run it independently since 2018, and its blog shows steady work: a rebuilt website and Instapaper 10 for iOS in July 2026, AI Voices for Android in the same release, and an app pre-installed on BOOX Palma 2 e-readers in August 2026.

The core promise is simple: save a page, Instapaper strips it to clean text, and you read it later on whatever device is near. The free plan is generous: unlimited saved articles, videos and pages, syncing across web, iOS and Android, folders, and an API for third-party apps.

Premium, at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year, adds what heavy readers ask for: full-text search across everything you saved (archived articles included), a permanent archive that keeps a copy of an article even if it disappears from the internet, unlimited notes, a PDF reader, Kindle integration, AI Voices with text-to-speech playlists on mobile, speed reading, and an ad-free website.

Where Instapaper is stronger

As a reading queue, Instapaper wins on several counts:

• A free plan. Unlimited saving, folders and sync cost nothing. Becoming has a 7-day free trial and no free tier.
• E-readers and more browsers. Instapaper is on Kobo e-readers and BOOX Palma devices, with extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Becoming has no e-reader app, and its extension is for Chrome on desktop.
• Offline reading. Instapaper’s apps sync articles for offline access. Becoming’s Reader needs a connection.
• Listening. AI Voices, text-to-speech playlists and speed reading are part of Premium. Becoming has no audio features.
• Send to Kindle. Instapaper delivers saved articles to a Kindle from its apps and browser extensions. Becoming sends nothing to e-readers.
• A permanent archive. Premium stores a lasting copy of each article. Becoming keeps the text of what you save, but does not market or guarantee an archival copy of the web.
• Organization for a big queue. Folders, tags, multiselect, keyboard shortcuts and a three-column web reader are built for people who process hundreds of articles. Becoming’s Reader has no folders or tags; its queue is three lists: Continue reading, Up next, Recently finished.
• Integrations for notes. Instapaper’s blog documents exports to Notion, Evernote and Obsidian. Becoming has no export integrations today.

What Becoming does differently as an Instapaper alternative

Becoming starts from a different question: what happens to the sentence you highlighted once the article is closed. It is a read-later app and a highlight manager in one, and the part it shares with Readwise is what comes after the highlight; the Readwise alternative page goes through that line by line.

A Reader for what you save

Save an article whole from the Chrome extension’s toolbar icon, or paste its address into Save a link in the web app. It lands in the Reader with its full text, a reading-time estimate and a place in the queue. Select a passage and a small toolbar offers Highlight or Copy. Finishing a piece marks it read; archiving keeps its highlights. Text size and dark mode are adjustable.

Two details matter if you come from Instapaper. When you save a whole page, a newsletter or a video, an AI model reads it and pulls out the passages worth keeping; that AI reading is part of The Library, within a monthly allowance, and highlights you make yourself, in the Reader or on a page with the extension, never touch it. And highlighting directly on a live web page needs the extension, so that part is desktop Chrome only.

The Reader also holds things Instapaper’s queue is not built around:

• Newsletters. You get your own @in.usebecoming.com address. Subscribe with it or forward an email; only senders you approve get in.

One library, books included

Instapaper’s highlights live inside Instapaper articles. Becoming puts article highlights in the same library as the ones from your books: Kindle (synced from the Becoming app or with the Chrome extension, or from a My Clippings.txt file), Goodreads, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, annotated PDFs, and photos of pages you marked in a paper book. X posts, bookmarks and likes come in too.

Everything is searchable two ways at once: by the exact words, or by describing the idea and letting semantic search match the meaning. Instapaper’s Premium search covers the full text of saved articles; Becoming’s covers every highlight from every source, on both plans.

Highlights that come back, and turn into practice

Instapaper does not resurface what you highlighted. Becoming’s Daily Review brings a handful of highlights back each day, in the app and by email, with less-seen passages coming up more often and favorites boosted.

On The Academy, any highlight can become a Theme: four weeks on one idea, shaped by related highlights from your own library, with a small Practice each day that takes a few minutes; the reasoning is in how to apply what you read. Becoming vs Instapaper pricing

Like for like, The Library sits a dollar a month under Instapaper Premium and The Academy a dollar over, but the plans do not buy the same thing. Instapaper Premium buys more around the queue: full-text article search, a permanent archive, audio and Kindle delivery. Becoming buys a read-later queue and a highlight library in one, with book highlights, a Daily Review and AI reading of what you save, and on The Academy, a way to practice what you read.

Instapaper has one paid plan: Premium at $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Its free plan is permanent and useful on its own, with a 5-note monthly limit and without full-text search, the permanent archive, text-to-speech or Kindle delivery.

Becoming has no free plan. Both subscriptions start with a 7-day free trial, and The Library’s trial needs no card.

• The Library is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year: every import source, the Reader, AI reading of what you save within a monthly allowance, keyword and semantic search, the Daily Review and its email, and MCP access.
• The Academy is $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year: everything in The Library plus Themes, daily Practices and automatic AI tagging.
• Founding Member is $174 once for lifetime Academy access.

Who should pick which

Stay with Instapaper if you read long articles on your phone or e-reader, often offline; you listen to articles; you want Send to Kindle; or you want a capable read-later app for free.

Pick Becoming if you highlight a lot and want those highlights to go somewhere: next to your Kindle and paper-book highlights, searchable by meaning, back in front of you every day, and turned into something you do. It also fits if your reading is as much newsletters and YouTube as articles.

Using both is reasonable. Read in Instapaper and keep Becoming as the place where highlights from everything end up.

How to move your Instapaper highlights into Becoming

Becoming has no direct Instapaper importer; these are the realistic paths.

1. Through Readwise, if you already use it. Readwise documents an Instapaper integration that imports your Instapaper highlights after you log in and grant permission. Becoming’s Readwise import then takes one API token (from readwise.io/access_token) and brings over your books, articles and podcasts with their highlights and notes. Highlights are deduplicated, so a later re-sync only adds what is new.
2. Paste them. For an article you care about, copy its highlights and use Add source → Manual highlight import. Create a source with the article’s title and author, paste the passages separated by blank lines or bullets, and check the preview before saving.
3. Re-save the articles that matter. Paste the URL into Integrations → Save a link. The article lands in the Reader with its full text, where you can highlight it again.

Your book highlights are the quick win: in the Becoming app, or in the web app with the Chrome extension, choose Add source → Kindle, and the highlights and notes from your Kindle books sync into the same library. The help center has a page for every import source.
