Becoming

Becoming: a Matter alternative for every highlight (2026)

By Nico, Founder of Becoming · Published · Verified

The short version

The Library replaces Matter's paid plan like for like, a read-later queue for articles and newsletters, highlighting in place and search, for less money ($49.99 a year against $60), and adds your Kindle and paper-book highlights, a Daily Review and AI reading that pulls highlights out of the articles, newsletters, videos and photographed pages you save. The Academy adds a second AI layer on top, which Matter does not have: 4-week Themes, short daily Practices and automatic tagging.

Choose Matter instead if…

  • you read mostly on iPhone or iPad and want a polished read-later app that works offline
  • you listen to articles or follow podcasts
  • you need Send to Kindle, or an API and a CLI
  • your highlights sync to Notion, Obsidian, Roam or Readwise

Becoming makes this page. Every fact about Matter links to its own site, and the verification date is above.

What Matter does well

Matter describes itself as “the modern read-later app for iPhone, iPad, and web”, and a Matter alternative has to match a product that is live and maintained: its site says its design has earned three Apple “App of the Day” features, the app is on the App Store and still being updated, and Matter now publishes documentation for a REST API and a terminal client.

What sets it apart from older read-later apps is how much of the modern internet it takes in:

  • Articles, threads and PDFs, saved from the apps or the browser extension, with what Matter calls best-in-class parsing.
  • Newsletters, three ways: connect Gmail from the iOS app, subscribe with a personal @subs.getmatter.com address, or forward emails in.
  • Writers you follow, from newsletters, X and Gmail.
  • YouTube videos and podcast episodes, transcribed into time-synced text.
  • Audio. Articles and newsletters become a playlist read by a voice Matter calls hard to tell from a human, and you can highlight while you listen.

Around that sit the tools for working through a queue: reordering, triage, filters and shuffle; tags; full-text search that works offline; highlights with notes; and Quoteshots for sharing a passage as an image.

Where Matter is stronger

Judged as a read-later app, Matter is ahead of Becoming in several places:

  • Built for iPhone and iPad. Matter is designed around reading on a phone or tablet first, and its Apple “App of the Day” features reflect that polish.
  • Listening. Text-to-speech playlists and highlighting by ear have no equivalent in Becoming.
  • Podcasts. Matter transcribes podcast episodes. Becoming only receives podcasts through a Readwise import; it does not transcribe them.
  • Offline. Matter searches full text and inside articles without a connection. Becoming’s Reader needs one.
  • Send to Kindle. Matter delivers articles, newsletters and blog posts to a Kindle, and on iOS can merge several into one ebook with a chapter per article. Becoming sends nothing to e-readers.
  • Your highlights go where you write. Matter documents ongoing sync of highlights and notes to Notion, Roam, Obsidian or Readwise, one-off exports per article, and CSV and ZIP exports of your library. Becoming has no export integrations today.
  • An API and a CLI. Developers on Matter Pro can save items, manage annotations and tags, and search from scripts or the terminal.
  • A free tier. Matter’s business-model page describes a free plan with an unlimited library, saving from apps and extensions, parsing and tags. Becoming has a 7-day trial and no free plan.
  • Gmail connection. Matter can fetch newsletters straight from a Gmail account. Becoming’s newsletter route is its own address, which you subscribe or forward to.

If reading and listening on an iPhone is the job, Matter is a very good answer. For a read-later app that lists Android and e-reader apps, there is an Instapaper comparison too.

What Becoming does differently as a Matter alternative

Becoming is a read-later app and a highlight manager in one, and what it adds is everything after the highlight; the Readwise alternative page covers that side. Its Reader answers the same question as Matter’s, what to read next, and then a second one: what happens to the passage you marked.

The Reader

Save an article whole with the Chrome extension’s toolbar icon, or paste its address into Save a link in the web app, and it opens in the Reader with its full text. The queue has three parts (Continue reading, Up next, Recently finished) and a reading-time estimate on each row. Select a passage to Highlight or Copy it. Reading to the end marks a piece read, archiving clears it from the queue without touching its highlights, and text size and dark mode are yours to set.

Newsletters arrive through your own @in.usebecoming.com address, open only to senders you approve. YouTube videos play above a transcript that follows playback; click a line to jump there, and any highlight keeps its timestamp, as shown in saving highlights from YouTube videos. Imported PDFs appear in the Reader once their text is extracted.

Two things to know. When you save a whole page, a newsletter or a video, an AI model reads it and pulls out the passages worth keeping; that AI reading is part of The Library, within a monthly allowance, and highlights you make yourself never touch it. And highlighting directly on a live web page uses the extension, so it is desktop Chrome only.

Your books are in the same library

Matter’s highlights come from what you read in Matter. Becoming also imports the highlights you already made elsewhere: Kindle books (from the Becoming app or with the Chrome extension, or from a My Clippings.txt file), Goodreads, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, annotated PDFs, and photos of pages you underlined in a paper book. X is covered too, from single posts to your bookmarks and likes; see how to save highlights from X.

All of it is searchable by exact words or by meaning: describe the idea (“passages about starting over”) and semantic search finds highlights that fit even with none of your words. That search is on both plans.

After the highlight

A Daily Review brings a handful of highlights back each day, in the app and by email. Less-seen highlights surface more often, favorites are boosted, and you choose the days, the time and the number.

On The Academy, a highlight can become a Theme: four weeks on one idea, built with related highlights from your own library, and a Practice of a few minutes each day. Tags are applied by AI as highlights arrive, and you confirm or remove them. A built-in MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor search and quote your library, and on The Academy generate Themes and complete Practices.

Becoming vs Matter pricing

What you do decides the comparison. If you only save and read, Matter’s free tier costs nothing and Becoming cannot match that. If you highlight, which Matter lists among its paid features, both Becoming plans come in under $8 a month, and The Library’s yearly price is $10 below Matter’s.

Matter’s business-model page describes a free tier and a paid plan at $8 a month or $60 a year, where HD text-to-speech, highlighting and note-taking, integrations, full-text search, personalization and priority support live. Matter’s API documentation calls the paid plan Matter Pro, and its homepage lists no price, so confirm the current figure in the app before you subscribe.

Becoming has no free plan; both subscriptions begin with a 7-day free trial, and The Library’s needs no card.

  • The Library, $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year: every import source, the Reader, unlimited highlighting, AI reading of what you save within a monthly allowance, keyword and semantic search, the Daily Review and MCP access.
  • The Academy, $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year: all of that plus Themes, daily Practices and AI tagging.
  • Founding Member, $174 once: lifetime Academy access.

Who should pick which

Stay with Matter if your reading happens on an iPhone or iPad; you listen to articles or follow podcasts; you need offline access or Send to Kindle; or your highlights are headed for Notion, Obsidian or Roam.

Pick Becoming if you want one place for every highlight, books included; you want them searchable by meaning and back in front of you daily; and you want some of them to become a practice rather than a note.

Or run both. Matter can keep syncing highlights to Readwise, and Becoming can import that Readwise library, so reading in Matter and practicing in Becoming is a workable setup.

How to move your Matter highlights into Becoming

There is no direct Matter importer. These are the real options.

  1. Matter → Readwise → Becoming. Matter documents syncing highlights and notes to Readwise on an ongoing basis. In Becoming, choose Add source → Readwise and paste your token from readwise.io/access_token. Becoming imports books, articles and podcasts with their highlights and notes, and deduplicates on re-sync, so you can repeat it whenever Matter has sent more.
  2. Export and paste. Matter offers one-off exports of an article’s highlights and notes. Copy them, then use Add source → Manual highlight import: create a source with the article’s title and author, paste the passages separated by blank lines or bullets, and check the preview before saving.
  3. Re-save what matters. Paste an article’s URL into Integrations → Save a link and it lands in the Reader with its full text. For a video, use Add source → YouTube and the transcript comes with it.

Then bring in the highlights Matter never had: in the Becoming app, or in the web app with the Chrome extension, choose Add source → Kindle to sync your Kindle highlights and notes, or upload your My Clippings.txt. The help center has a page for each source.

Bring your Matter highlights over The Library is 7 days free, no card needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matter still available in 2026?

Yes. Matter's site presents it as the modern read-later app for iPhone, iPad and web, the app is available on the App Store with recent updates, and Matter publishes developer documentation for a REST API and a command-line client.

Is Becoming a read-later app like Matter?

Yes. Becoming's Reader is a read-later queue for saved articles, newsletters, YouTube videos and imported PDFs; you highlight in place, finish or archive. It has no text-to-speech, podcast transcription, offline mode or Send to Kindle. It adds AI reading of what you save, one library with your book highlights, a Daily Review, and on The Academy, Themes with Practices.

Can I move my Matter highlights into Becoming?

Not directly. Matter documents an ongoing sync of highlights and notes to Readwise, and Becoming imports a Readwise library with one API token, so that is the cleanest route. You can also paste an article's highlights with Paste Highlights, or re-save the article with Save a link and highlight it again.

Is Becoming cheaper than Matter?

On paid plans, yes. Matter's business-model page lists $8 a month or $60 a year, plus a free tier; its homepage lists none, so check in the app. Becoming has no free tier: after a 7-day trial, The Library is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year and The Academy $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year.

Does Becoming read articles aloud like Matter?

No. Matter turns articles and newsletters into an audio playlist and lets you highlight while listening. Becoming has no audio features. If listening is how you get through your queue, Matter is the better fit.

What does Becoming do that Matter doesn't?

It imports the highlights from your Kindle, Goodreads, Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play Books, annotated PDFs and photos of paper pages, keeps them with your article and video highlights, searches them by meaning, brings them back in a Daily Review, and on The Academy turns them into 4-week Themes with a small Practice each day.
